He is famous for his research on the effects of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) on the ozone layer, which led to the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole. He was the co-recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work in atmospheric chemistry. Molina studied chemical engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and later received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. In 1974, he became interested in the effects of CFCs on the ozone layer, and in 1975 he published a paper in the journal Nature describing the potential danger of CFCs to the environment. His research contributed to the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, an international agreement to phase out the production of CFCs.
